Design gurus reveal what they predict for the future

  • INDEX and workspace at INDEX reveal the results of qualitative research
  • 25 leaders of the design and architecture industry polled for their predictions
  • Predictions will form an installation at the four-day design shows which open on 18th May at the Dubai World Trade Centre

index ann logoDubai: After polling 25 of the leading minds of design and architecture across the globe, for what they think design of the future will bring, dmg events; organisers of INDEX and workspace at INDEX has today unveiled the results.

The research was commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of INDEX and featured varied responses as expected, but there were several key themes that were highlighted throughout:

  • Sustainable design

One of the most popular prediction themes to come from the research is the idea of sustainability and design. Whilst some felt that design and architecture needs to move to becoming 100% sustainable and explore self-recycling potential others felt that the future holds new materials and technologies which will tackle eco design dilemmas and see scientists working more closely with designers

  • Morphing design and architecture

A common belief among those polled was that commercial and residential building design in the future will need to be intuitive to each end user whether that is intelligent building skins which respond user needs or even buildings which are able to pre-empt user needs before the user realises their own needs

  • Design sharing and collaboration

With the continued rise of social media and society’s desire to share, several respondents felt that the future of design lies in the ability for design to be a more collaborative industry; where communities are involved in architecture and social media is far more integrated into building architecture

From company CEOs, Directors and Founders including Ali Malik and Shiree Darley, Charles Leon and Linda Meriau to Professors, Architects and Trend Translators such as Phil Pond, Marie Laurent and Sophie Johnson, the group of 25 interviewees are all directly involved in the design and architecture industry from both commercial and residential design arenas.

“Design has always evolved rapidly throughout time and so we wanted to gain an insight into what some of the sharpest and most creative minds in the industry think the future holds for architecture and design,” comments Frederique Maurell, Group Event Director for INDEX and workspace at INDEX, “The prospect of 100% sustainable design, collaborative architecture and buildings which adapt to the individuals which use them is extremely exciting and we are already seeing developments which will lead us on a path which will see these predictions come to fruition.”

All of the 25 full responses will be on display, as one of the design installations, at INDEX and workspace at INDEX from 18th to 21st May at the Dubai World Trade Centre
